Living Wage Rate to be Annouced

The announcement of the Living Wage rate for 2026–2027 on 1 April 2026 highlights New Zealand’s ongoing effort to address the real cost of living and support low-income workers. While the official rate is independently calculated each year based on average wage movements and household expenses, recent projections suggest a continued upward trend from the 2025–2026 rate of $28.95 per hour .

This annual update is significant because, unlike the government-mandated minimum wage—which will rise to $23.95 per hour from the same date —the Living Wage reflects what workers actually need to live with dignity, covering essentials such as housing, food, and transport. The 2026 announcement not only signals a response to inflation and economic pressures but also reinforces the growing expectation on employers to go beyond minimum legal requirements and contribute to fairer, more sustainable livelihoods for their employees.
