Across Aotearoa, a growing number of schools are committing to being a “Living Wage School”, signalling a meaningful shift in how education communities value their staff. By signing the pledge, these schools agree to pay all employees—particularly cleaners, caretakers, and support staff—a wage that reflects the real cost of living, rather than the legal minimum. Advocates say the movement not only helps reduce in-work poverty, but also strengthens school communities by recognising the essential role every staff member plays in students’ wellbeing and success. As momentum builds, supporters hope more schools will follow suit, setting a new standard for fairness and dignity across the education sector.
